Islamabad, April 15, 2026 : The Pakistan Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) expresses deep concern and strongly condemns three security incidents involving polio teams reported today in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

In separate incidents in Bannu, Hangu, and Nasirabad, polio teams and accompanying security personnel were targeted by unidentified militants. In Nasirabad, a police official, Farman Bashir Behrani, embraced martyrdom while on duty with a polio vaccination team, and another police official sustained injuries.

Ms. Ayesha Raza Farooq, Prime Minister’s Focal Person (PMFP) on Polio Eradication, strongly condemned the incidents, stating:

“Today’s attacks are unacceptable. We are deeply saddened by the martyrdom of police official Farman Bashir Behrani, who laid down his life in the line of duty while protecting those working to safeguard our children. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and stand in solidarity with our law enforcement personnel and frontline workers who continue to serve despite these risks. Their courage reflects the best of our national spirit, and we will not allow such acts of violence to undermine this vital mission. The safety of our teams remains non-negotiable.”

The programme stands in unwavering solidarity with all affected teams and security personnel. Despite these challenges, Pakistan’s commitment to polio eradication remains resolute. These acts will not deter our collective mission.

Polio is a highly infectious disease caused by poliovirus mainly affecting children under the age of five years. It invades the nervous system and can cause paralysis or even death. While there is no cure for polio, vaccination is the most effective way to protect children from this disease. Each time a child under the age of five is vaccinated, their protection against the virus is increased. Repeated immunisations have protected millions of children from polio, allowing almost all countries in the world to become polio-free, besides the two endemic countries of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
